Congratulations to Herts at War who received £99,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to develop Herts at War – A Digital Legacy throughout Hertfordshire. Made possible by National Lottery players through HLF’s Our Heritage Programme, the project will focus on tracing, interpreting, preserving and displaying unseen historic collections relating to the story of the Great War in Hertfordshire and beyond.
To mark the Centenary of the First World War, and to build a lasting legacy for future generations, the project will create an innovative, free and easy to use digital platform, which will house a state-of-the-art electronic archive, bringing thousands of documents, photographs and artefacts to the public domain for the very first time. In combination with a travelling community exhibition, the project will inform and educate the wider public about the experiences of the people of Hertfordshire, both at home and abroad, during the Great War. We will connect the men and women of 100 years ago to today’s relatives and community.
Herts at War – A Digital Legacy will be a volunteer led project, created by the people of Hertfordshire and for them. Not only will it create a go-to resource for the public and students alike, but it will act as an innovative, secure and diverse home for a state-of-the-art archive and interactive resource.
At this time a century ago the First World War was been waged across the globe - millions of families were affected. Today much of the personal impact of the conflict has been lost through the passage of time. This new project will actively seek to uncover and digitally preserve those important historical artefacts that are still in existence in private hands or forgotten in family archives. Bringing new historical resources to the public will benefit communities, students and future generations to remember, and crucially, to understand, the experiences of our ancestors during the Great War.
