Saving Captain Studholme’s Cross
By Stephen Callaghan
Join Stephen Callaghan for his Zoom talk on saving the wooden memorial cross to Captain Lancelot Studholme of the 7th (service) Battalion, Leinster Regiment.
Captain Studholme was killed in action on 9 September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. After this death, an impressive 6.6-meter-tall oak cross was erected on his family estate.
This talk will explore Captain Studholme’s life and how the cross came to be rediscovered by Stephen and how it underwent extensive conservation to ensure it will survive for another 100 plus years!
Stephen has an avid interest in Birr Barracks and the Leinster Regiment and is currently pursuing a part time MLitt History in UCD.
