03 Oct

This presentation by Dave Griffiths will look at the Guards Division which was formed on the instruction of Lord Kitchener in August 1915 as an elite force and its first battlefield experience was at Loos in September and October 1915. This fully illustrated talk  will look at the Guards culture, its training and preparation for the 'Big Push' at Loos, its performance in the attack on Hill 70 and the vicious close- quarters combat at the Hohenzollern Redoubt. Particular attention will also be paid to the role of the Guards GOC, Earl Cavan, who went on to become one of the most effective battlefield commanders of the Great War.
