Battle of Selle October 1918 - by Peter Hodgkinson
02 Oct

Making a welcome return to Chesterfield will be our former Chairman / Secretary, Peter Hodgkinson, who will explain the Battle of Selle in October 1918.

Dr Peter Hodgkinson is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who obtained his PhD in the Department of War Studies, University of Birmingham. He is the author of British Infantry Commanders in the First World War, 'Glum Heroes' - Hardship, Fear and Death - Resilience and Coping in the British Army on the Western Front, and The Battle of The Selle - Fourth Army Operations on the Western Front in the Hundred Days.

The battle of the Selle, 17-25 October 1918, saw the British force the Germans out of a new defensive line along the River Selle that they had been forced to take up being forced out of the Hindenburg Line. The Battle of the Selle proves a good example of an infantry battle, won by dogged perseverance and skilled infantry work, and good leadership. Peter will cover this and more. The fighting on Fourth Army front, between Le Cateau and the Andigny Forest, is the subject of Peter’s third book, to be published in in 2017.
