Sarah Reay 'The Half Shilling Curate: A personal account of war and faith 1914-1918'
12 Oct

Sarah's talk is based on her book "The Half Shilling Curate". The story of First World War army chaplain, Reverend Herbert Butler Cowl MC, who was awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry.  He served with the BEF in France  and Flanders, was severely wounded and returned home on the ill fated HMHS Anglia when she sank in the Channel (the first hospital ship mined during the war). The talk draws on Cowl's letters and journals, communications to and from the War Office, letters from comrades in his battalion and newspaper accounts.
