18 October 1914 Sdt (Marsouin) Benoit Riviere1756 Sdt (Marsouin) Benoit Riviere, 5e RIC.

From Moulins-Cherier, Loire, Benoit was born on 5 February 1883. A recalled reservist, he rejoined the army for full time service on 3 August 1914 at Lyon and he saw his first action at Walscheid on 19 August 1914. After spending much of August and September 1914 in almost constant action in the area of the Vosges mountains, Benoit's regiment moved to the Meuse front and, by early October, was engaged in the Argonne forest. He was killed in action at Richecourt on 18 October 1914 and he is now buried in the Necropole Nationale at Flirey.
