The Somme squares 57C and 57D Mapping the Front discs contain maps and aerial photographs of the northen and centre parts of the Somme battlefield.

Notes.

  • The date given is the latest for any photograph, sometimes obtained from fine detail on a mosiac etc. Many of the photographs cover a wide date period. Some mosiacs are made from photos that differ widely in date. Some have no date.
  • The map references are a guide only. If a reference is given as say F 16-29, it does not mean that all squares in that range are shown, simply that some of the squares are visible. In others, a representative map reference is given, even if more of that is visible. Researches are advised to look a photographs nearby the area of interest in case the map references given here cause some doubt. Where these references or places are given, they have generally been taken from the handwritten notes on the reverse of each photograph. It is not known if these notes originated in the IWM or in the unit that produced the photograph.
  • The scan quality is such that all detail visible with a hand lens on the original is visible on the scan. For some of the scans, it is easier to see fine detail on the scan than on the original.
  • The type is given a code as below.
