Nigel Crompton of the Ox & Bucks branch is giving a talk called 'Ministry of Munitions Fire Brigade, HM Factory Gretna' on the 21/06/18 at The Devils Porridge Museum, Stanfield, Annan Road, Eastriggs, DG12 6TF.
The subject comes from his Masters dissertation.
For nearly a decade the only large motorised fire brigade in the Borders area came from HM Cordite Factory Gretna.
The talk will commence with construction beginning, then through the production period including the involvement of both women workers and the Women Police Service. Finally we look at the demise of the site from 1919 up until 1925.
As well as being the Deputy Chair for Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Branch of The Western Front Association, Nigel is also on the Executive Committee of Fire Heritage Network UK. This the umbrella organisation for fire museums and collections with fire fighting exhibits. Nigel is responsible for any Great War Centenary questions or requests for help with exhibitions, display materials or talks.
