Education

We are always learning about the Great War of 1914-18 so, in a way, all material is part of our education and learning about the First World War.

However, these sites - or sub-sites - in this section are especially dedicated to education.

Please also look at our web links section as a whole, as there is a wide range of websites with a wealth of information about the conflict.

World War I was a military conflict centered on Europe that began in the summer of 1914. The fighting ended in late 1918. This conflict involved all of the world's great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (centred around the Triple Entente) and the Central Powers. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. More than 9 million combatants were killed, due largely to great technological advances in firepower without corresponding ones in mobility. It was the second deadliest conflict in history. The war is also known as the First World War, the Great War, the War To End All Wars or the World War (prior to the outbreak of World War II).

9   Link   Project Inspire
Pupils and staff at Abbey Grange have been inspired to create this website. Study trips focusing on WW1 and WW2, and remembrance activities in school have been our stimulus. We have started to collect our relatives memories and research the role our city played during major conflicts.

This site has not been designed to endorse war. We firmly believe we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all who fought for and worked hard to support the fight for our freedom. We dedicate Project Inspire to all their memories. We continue to be inspired.

War Memorials Trust is the national charity dedicated to the protection and conservation of war memorials in the UK. The Trust has developed its Learning Programme to teach young people, the next generation of war memorial custodians, about the history and significance of war memorials.
