Pvt Josef Adamec, US Army Tank Corps
Born in Austria-Hungary (an area that is now part of the Czech Republic) on 19 March 1893, Josef emigrated to the USA in 1910 where he gained work as a labourer in Gary, Indiana. He enlisted into the US Regular Army on 15 April 1917 and, after training at Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, was assigned to Company E of the 10th Infantry Regiment at El Paso, Texas.
In June 1917, Josef was sent with the AEF to France where, after serving for a while as an infantryman, transferred to the Tank Corps. A veteran of the Battle of Cantigny, Josef died of accidental causes on 14 November 1918. He is now buried in the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery at Belleau, France.
