Information: Peter Simkins was born in West London in 1939 and educated at Ealing Grammar School and King’s College London, where he read history. After graduating in 1961, he worked as an archivist and research assistant to Captain Sir Basil Liddell Hart before joining the staff of the Imperial War Museum in 1963. He remained at the IWM for over thirty-five years and became its Senior Historian. On his retirement in 1999 he was awarded the MBE. He is currently Honorary Professor in Modern History and a member of the Centre for First World War Studies at the University of Birmingham; President of the Western Front Association since May, 2011 (as well as Honorary President of the WFA’s Cheltenham and Gloucester Branch); a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society; and a member of both the Army Records Society and the British Commission for Military History. He now lives in Cheltenham. Peter is still an active jazz pianist and record collector and also a long-suffering fan of Ipswich Town.
