Based on his book of the same name, David Britton will talk about his Uncle, Captain Benjamin Chipcase Clayton MC who was an Art Teacher from County Durham. During his 18 months in the line he completed 40 'Sketches from the Front' and these can be linked to events described in his Colonel's diary (published in 1964 as 'General Jack's Diary'.
On the 16th August 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele, Captain Clayton with his depleted battalion, the 2nd Battallion, Prince of Wales's Own West Yorkshire Regiment, took their objective, the Zonnebeke Redoubt, but were driven back 6 hours later. Captain Clayton was awarded a posthumous MC for his actions that day.
