The Western Front Association's 10th President's Conference

Doors open at 9.00am for a start at 9.45am. It is expected the event will draw to a close at 4.30pm

1917: The Darkest Year?

  • 'British Monarchy in 1917' with Prof. Heather Jones
  • 'Collective Training in 1917 'Mastering' Trench Warfare' with Harry Sanderson 
  • 'Australian Medical Services in 1917' with Dr. Alexia Moncrieff 

Panel: chaired by Prof. Gary Sheffield 

Cost £35 includes a buffet lunch, plus tea and coffee breaks. Dietary requirements can be catered for.

Dr. Spencer Jones is an award-winning historian and author. He is Senior Lecturer in Armed Forces and War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton and serves as the Regimental Historian for the Royal Regiment of Artillery. 

Prof. Heather Jones joined University College London as Professor in Modern and Contemporary European History in 2018. She previously worked at the London School of Economics and Political Science where she was Associate Professor in International History.

Harry Sanderson graduated from the University of Kent in 2016 with a BA (Hons) in War Studies with an Approved Year Abroad (First Class) where his dissertation on the importance of small-arms to the British Army in 1918 won the School of History Prize for the Best War Studies Dissertation. 

Dr Alexia Moncrieff joined the University of Leeds in September 2016 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on 'Men, Women and Care', an ERC-funded project in the School of History. She was appointed to a 3-year position as Teaching Fellow in Modern Global History at the beginning of the 2020/21 academic year.
