The Battle of the Somme was one of the most important and bloodiest battles of the First World War. This illustrated presentation is aimed both at those with little or no knowledge of the battle and those who have a more detailed knowledge. It examines the background to the battle; the plan, strategy and tactics adopted by the British forces; the rival commanders and the aftermath. It also looks at the battle’s significance to the unionists of Northern Ireland and some of the notable Irishmen who fought at the Somme.
Gerry White is the Island of Ireland Trustee and chair of the Cork Branch of The Western Front Association.
