Live zoom from Toronto, Canada

About this talk: Three Montreal nursing sisters - Clare Gass, Harriet Drake and Mildred Forbes - ran Casualty Clearing Station No. 2 in Poperinge during the most violent and most crucial months on the Ypres sector in 1917-18. Together they endured bombing raids, shellfire, and endless convoys in the dangerous Ypres sector as they fought to save the lives of soldiers on the Western Front. This talk explores not only their experiences near the Front Line but also traces their very different paths to get there, since first stepping foot in Europe in spring 1915. The talk is based on their own words and photographs, and also those of their Canadian colleagues.

About the speaker: Andrea McKenzie is an associate professor at York University, Toronto. Her specialist areas include women's war narratives and the Great War.
