About the speaker: Dr Anne Samson is an historian of war with particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa during the Great War and on Lord Kitchener. She has been researching the African theatres, mainly East, Central and Southern Africa, for over 20 years and co-ordinates the Great War in Africa Association (www.gweaa.com). She was a member of the 2020/21 CWGC Enquiry into the Uncommemorated.
About the talk: When Anne first started studying Africa, she couldn't understand why Kitchener didn't want to go to war there. She set out to discover why. "In the process, after reading the 60+ existing biographies, I discovered a very different side to the man I'd been brought up to know. This led me to work on a new biography of Kitchener in which I consider how he got his reputation(s) and how achieved what he did." This talk is based on that book, Kitchener: The man not the myth.
