About the talk: By the point, Ludendorff's problem was that the places he needed most to take, to create a path to victory, were also those which were most strongly defended. But, by so doing, he merely weakened his own forces. On 28th March 1918 - perhaps buoyed by his overwhelming victory over the Royal Artillery a week earlier (see 'The Royal Artillery's Blackest Day') - Ludendorff launched a hastily planned attack on the Allied defences at Arras. Yet, by the day's end, the offensive had been called off ... In this talk, Dr Spencer Jones examines and analyses the strategies and thinking on both sides of the frontline on this crucial - but little discussed - day.
