“Peril in Paradise” – The Great War in Asia and the Pacific with Robert Fleming
20 Mar

Robert Fleming returns to the Branch having visited us last year, when he gave a fascinating talk on 'The Zeppelin Menace & German Strategic Bombing in the First World War' (August 2024).

This talk introduces the now almost completely forgotten conflicts in the Asian and Pacific theatres of the Great War, focusing particularly on Germany's Pacific Ocean colonies, and on the naval war in the Indian, Pacific and South Atlantic oceans. It looks at the participants, the leadership figures and the decision making as well as examining key battles, outcomes and legacy.

Robert Fleming is a historian, researcher, and writer with over twenty years’ experience in the museum sector. He has worked as a museum curator, library and archives manager and archaeologist in both Australia and the UK, including at the Imperial War Museum and the National Army Museum.

Rob specialises in imperialism and the post-colonial legacy, the military history of British Empire and Commonwealth forces (particularly in the world wars), and the politics of empire.
