About the Talk :-
THE BATTLE OF CORONEL – 1ST NOVEMBER 1914
Fought in the southern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile, the Battle of Coronel was both the first major naval battle of the Great War and Britain’s first naval defeat for over a century. This session will not be in the form of a lecture or presentation, but rather a simulation of the battle and will put participants in the shoes of the ships’ captains on that fatal day. It will illustrate some of the problems of naval warfare at that time. Can you resolve the problems that confronted the British commander, Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher George Francis Maurice Cradock KCVO CB SGM ? Alternatively, are you able to emulate the success of his German counterpart Vice Admiral Maximillian von Spee?

Rear-Admiral Craddock. Vice Admiral von Spee
