A Medical Officer on the Western Front by Steve Roberts

Military Historian and Battlefield Guide Steve Roberts will give a presentation about the experiences of a Surgeon who served on the Western Front from 1914 to 1918. The presentation will be part of Steve’s on-going research and will include his diary, personal documents and photographs none of which are currently in the public domain. This will be a bespoke and unique talk for the Surrey Branch.

Steve spent 12 years as a regular soldier serving with the Royal Military Police in a variety of operational theatres. On leaving the Army, he joined the Metropolitan Police and served for a further 23 years. Following his retirement, he established himself in a second career as a Military Historian and researcher and in this capacity has worked on a number of TV productions including, 'Who Do You Think You Are?', 'Find My Past' and 'The One Show'. He was also one of the panel experts on the 'BBC WW1 Roadshow'. For the past twenty years, Steve has been involved in archaeology on the Western Front and in this capacity both as historian and archaeologist has been involved in a number of television productions on the subject. As a battlefield guide, Steve has been leading groups of all types to the battlefields of WW1 and WW2 for over 25 years.

SPECIAL RAFFLE

John Nichol’s new book THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR – A Personal Journey of Discovery and Remembrance is out now. It is an evocative and informative piece of writing. In recognition of the assistance that he received from various members of the WFA when researching this book, John has donated a complimentary signed copy to the branch which will be included in our regular meeting raffle this month.

This meeting will be held in Cobham.  Members of The Western Front Association and non-members are equally welcome.  We ask for a modest £5 donation on the door.  This includes tea, coffee and biscuits at the break (before the Q&A session with the speaker). It also includes free tickets for the book raffle.

Members joining us at Cobham can use our new cashless card system and use their credit card/phone with the new reader that will be available at the signing-in desk.

To help make things easier and safer, we are asking those coming to Cobham to bring their own mug for coffee or tea.

Steve’s talk starts at 8pm.  Doors open at Cobham at 7:15pm and the meeting starts at 7:45pm
