It is with deep sadness that we announce that Major Tonie Holt died peacefully last week at the age of 91. A man of many talents, Major Holt was a decorated soldier, a respected historian, a prolific author, and a pioneer in battlefield tourism.
Born in 1932, Tonie Holt served his country with distinction, rising to Major during his military career. His deep knowledge of military history and passion for preserving the memory of those who fought in some of the most pivotal battles in history led him to co-author numerous books, often in collaboration with his wife, Valmai Holt. Their groundbreaking work in battlefield guiding, particularly their tours of First World War and Second World War sites, touched countless individuals' lives, allowing families to connect with the sacrifices of earlier generations.
Together, Tonie and Valmai are best known for their influential books on battlefield tourism, including the widely acclaimed Major & Mrs. Holt’s Battlefield Guides. These meticulously researched guides became essential resources for those wishing to visit the sites of historic battles, ensuring that the legacy of those who served would not be forgotten. Their work also contributed significantly to the growing interest in battlefield tourism, helping to preserve important historical sites for future generations. More recently, we reviewed ‘My Boy Jack’, written by the couple.
Major Holt remained a tireless advocate for military history and education throughout his life. His passion for storytelling, paired with his vast knowledge, made him a sought-after guide and speaker. He is survived by his wife, Valmai, their children, and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Major Holt’s family asks that donations be made to a military charity of choice in his memory.
