The new Universities Trustee of The Western Front Association is Dr Will Butler. He is in the final stages of assembling a team to help with the next stages of the WFA's wish to strengthen its outreach work.

Will has commented 'I am delighted to take up the role as the Universities Trustee in what is an exciting time for The Western Front Association. I am looking forward to helping to build and strengthen the relationship between us as an organisation and scholars of the First World War, primarily helping to further the study of the conflict with the next generation of experts. We are planning a number of exciting initiatives, which we would like to be driven by the needs of scholars so please do get in touch if you'd like to be involved'.

Will completed his undergraduate degree in War Studies in 2009, and his Master's in War, Propaganda and Society in 2010. He then secured a scholarship to complete his PhD thesis on the 'Irish Amateur Military Tradition in the British Army', which formed the basis of his first book in 2016.

During the centenary period, he worked freelance for a number of charities and schools, curating exhibitions, and developed a First World War-themed walking tour phone app of Folkestone.

Alongside teaching postgraduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Kent, Will also ran the First World War Schools Project at the institution, working with young people across the south-east until 2019.

He has been involved with The Western Front Association for a number of years, giving talks to branches across the country, participating in conferences, and was lucky enough to have his book launch hosted by them in Belfast.

He is now the Head of Military Records at The National Archives, is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Kent, and sits on the Council of the Army Records Society
