Emlyn Holt Davies died of illness on this day in 1918.
Emlyn Holt Davies was born 19 April 1876 in Machynlleth, Wales, the son of Edward Davies (a shoemaker) and Mary (née Holt).
He was educated at Bangor Independent College, and the University College of North Wales where he obtained his degree in 1900.
He entered the Congregational Ministry, becoming a Missionary under the London Missionary Society in Calcutta. He subsequently returned to the United Kingdom, owing to ill-health, and held pastorates at Hadleigh, Pitsea, and the Westport Congregational Church, Malmesbury.
On 29 March 1910 he married Winifred (née Williams) at the Congregational Church, Talybont-on-Usk, Wales. A year later at the 1911 Census he was at home with his wife, 3 month old daughter Eluned Mary, a general servant (age 16) and a visitor. They later had two more daughters, Gwenllian and Myfanwy.
Living in Malmesbury in November 1917, Emlyn volunteered for service as Chaplain, Y.M.C.A. with the Indian troops and was sent to France on 8 January 1918.
He contracted meningitis and died, aged 41 years, at the Military Hospital, Cérisy-sur-Somme on 18 March 1918.
He was buried in the Cérisy-Gailly Military Cemetery.
