The Military Career of General Peyton C. March, United States Army, by Will Bryant
27 Jul
Peyton C March was a career US Army artillery officer who served in the Philippines, Mexico and in France during the Great War. After organising the artillery training regime for the US Army in France, and personally seeing the first brigade through the course, in 1918 he was selected by U.S. Secretary of War, Newton D. Baker to assume the office of Chief of Staff of the US Army.
March was seen as an energetic and effective administrator and his effect on the Home Front was immediate.
Overseeing an expanding army and creating the Air Service, Tank Corps & Chemical Warfare Service,  he restructured the Army to be more centralised, ridding the bureau chiefs of their power. He also ensured that the maximum number of troops were trained and sent to Europe as soon as possible, thus enabling a separate US Army to be formed within sixteen months of the USA entering the war.
March retired in 1921, travelled the world, remarried, & wrote his memoirs 'The Nation at War' which was published 1932.
Will Bryant is a retired member of the Irish Naval Service who has had a life-ling interest in the United States armed forces.
