Stuart Hadaway - Pyramids and Fleshpots: The Egyptian, Senussi and Eastern Mediterranean Campaigns, 1914-16.

Men in the trenches of the Western Front may have envied those who spent the war among the 'pyramids and fleshpots' of the exotic East, but the war in the desert was far from a picnic.  The defence of Egypt, and especially the Suez Canal, was crucial to Britain's war effort.  Besieged from the east by the Ottomans, from the west by the Senussi, and in the heart of Egypt itself by nationalist unrest, the troops in Egypt often found themselves ill-equipped for the tasks they faced.  This talk looks at the campaigns fought to save Egypt in the first years of the war
