The Medical support that Cumbria gave to the Great War by Richard Preston
14 Jan

This talk by Richard Preston explores the reasons for the creation of VAD units both nationally and in Cumbria. It then focuses on the subsequent development and expansion of the Auxiliary Hospitals. The talk touches on the effect of the Quintinshill Rail disaster, just over the border in Scotland and how Carlisle’s Auxiliary hospital with its VADs helped in this dreadful situation. It concludes by looking at the three deaths out of seven in the county emanating from the Auxiliary Hospitals in Penrith
