21 April 1918 : Pte Joseph Underwood

Born Staffon, County Kildare, 3 October 1892. 

Parents, Mathew and Elizabeth Underwood (née Gordon), Belford House, Blackrath, Co. Kildare. 

In 1911, living with his parents and seven siblings (5 brothers, 2 sisters) 

A bricklayer. 

Enlisted in the Royal Munster Fusiliers, 23 November 1915

Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps 16 July 1916

Served in France and took part in fighting on the Somme and subsequently sent to Italy 10 December 1917. Rejoined his corps in France 6 April 1918 and died at No.4 General Hospital, Camiers on 21 April of wounds received in action. Age 23. 

Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
