Notable Leinsters of Birr

By

Stephen Callaghan

Join Stephen Callaghan for a talk about noteworthy Leinster Regiment soldiers connected with their spiritual home of Birr. This midlands town was the regiments depot was from its creation in 1881 until its disbandment in 1922. While the town has produced many soldiers of note, including several Victoria Cross recipients, this talk will specifically focus on men who wore the cap badge of the Leinsters, some of whom went onto become regimental sergeant majors, or present at the regiment’s disbandment, or had previously fought the bubonic plague in Hong Kong!

Stephen is a native of Dublin and has been described as an “honoury Birr person”, probably due to his keen interest in the town. Stephen has written on the town’s military history and his most recent book was about the military cemetery connected to Birr Barracks. He was also involved in the excavation of WW1 era training in 2018 and the conservation of the oak cross memorial to Captain Lancelot Studholme in 2019.
