The Military Career of Edward Gerrard, Royal Artillery 1914 to 1934.

By Peter Gerrard

Edward Gerrard, having failed his Medical exams joined the Royal Artillery at Newbridge in May 1914.

He was finally sent overseas in 1915 to Egypt and Suvla Bay. A brief return to Ireland saw him involved in the 1916 Rising during which he was wounded and witnessed some of the actions of Bowen Colthurst. Returning to Egypt later that year he was with General Allenby’s army through Sinai, Gaza, Khan Yunis, Jerusalem Xmas 1917 and on to Damascus, in October 1918.

His diaries and letters home give contrasting views of conditions and his reactions as a young officer playing a small part in world changing events. They also give a lowly perspective on events described by Lawrence in 7 Pillars of Wisdom.

After the war he subsequently served India, Somaliland, UK bases and Drumree, Lough Swilly.

The lecture by his son Peter, will be illustrated by photos taken by him, extracts from some 30 censored letters home, diaries and notes made at the time and later recollections.
In short, not a rare perspective and not without prejudices of his time and upbringing,
but as one generation removed may bring some retrospection, tolerance and affection to his experiences.
