The Battle of Jutland a talk by Gavin Davies
The Battle of Jutland, fought from May 31 to June 1, 1916, was the largest naval battle of World War I and the only full-scale clash of battleships during the war. It took place in the North Sea, near the coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula, between the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe and the German High Seas Fleet commanded by Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer.
The battle was tactically inconclusive but strategically significant. The Germans inflicted heavier losses in ships and men, but the British maintained naval superiority and continued their blockade of Germany, which contributed to the long-term Allied victory. Both sides claimed victory, but the British control of the seas remained unchallenged after the battle.
