The Cenotaph and Remembrance

The Western Front Association (WFA) has long been committed to ensuring that the sacrifices of those who served in the First World War are never forgotten. Central to this mission is our annual presence at the Cenotaph in London, the nation’s foremost memorial to the fallen.

Reviving the Ceremony

In 1994, The Western Front Association took over responsibility for the annual First World War commemoration at the Cenotaph, following the closure of the Old Contemptibles Association. This handover ensured that the tradition of honouring those who served on the Western Front would continue without interruption.

Since then, the WFA has maintained a dignified and consistent presence at this national memorial, organising wreath-laying and remembrance activities each year. Our role at the Cenotaph reflects our ongoing commitment to preserving memory, educating the public, and connecting members and visitors with the sacrifices and stories of the First World War.

An Annual Tribute

Each year on November 11th, our members gather at the Cenotaph to lay wreaths, pay respects, and honour those who served. This ceremony is a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and an opportunity to reflect on the lessons of the First World War.

A Living Connection to History

By maintaining an annual presence at the Cenotaph, the WFA ensures that remembrance is not only observed but actively taught and shared. Members of all ages, historians, and visitors join us to witness this enduring tradition, connecting the past with the present and inspiring future generations to remember.

Join Us in Remembrance

The WFA welcomes all members to participate in this solemn and meaningful event. Whether attending in person or supporting our activities locally, you can help keep the legacy of the First World War alive and ensure that the Cenotaph remains a focal point for national remembrance.
