Originally screened by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) in 1964, ‘The Great War’ is a 26-episode documentary series on the First World War made to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of that conflict. It was a co-production of the Imperial War Museum, the BBC, and the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Written by John Terraine and Correlli Barnett, two historians who later became presidents of the WFA.

The series was narrated by Sir Michael Redgrave, it contains readings by Ralph Richardson, Marius Goring, Cyril Luckham, Sebastian Shaw and Emlyn Williams. It was also the first series to include contributions from veterans of the war

In this presentation, branch chair, Gerry White, will look at how the series was received when it was first screened, its awards, and how it has stood the test of time.

Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts. Admission is free but, if possible we would appreciate a small donation of €5.00 to help cover branch costs.
