Cork and the 1916 Rising: Order, Counterorder and Disorder
The 1916 Rising was one of the most significant events in Irish history. It was also a chapter in the Great War. From 24 to 29 April 1916, Irish rebel forces consisting of the Irish Volunteers, Irish Citizen Army and Hibernian Rifles fought an unsuccessful battle against Crown forces in Dublin to establish an independent Irish Republic. Due to a series of conflicting and confusing orders issued from Irish Volunteer headquarters in Dublin, rebel units in other parts of the country failed to participate in the Rising. This presentation examines the situation in Cork, before, during and after the Rising with a focus on the decisions the leadership of the Cork Brigade of Irish Volunteers were confronted with during that time and how it responded to them.
