Slaughter on the Somme
The first of July 2026 will be the 110th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. This battle (or campaign) would last from 1 July to 18 November 1916, and it is primarily remembered for the high number of casualties sustained by Allied and German forces. This presentation gives an overview of the battle with a focus on the parts played by Irish units and individual Irish soldiers. It examines the part played by the 36th (Ulster) Division on the first day of the battle, looks at the Irish soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross for acts of gallantry, It also looks at some of the prominent Irish soldiers who fought at the Somme, including the two nationalist politicians, Willie Redmond and Tom Kettle. How the battle has been commemorated will also be examined.
