Ireland's Memorial Records
‘Ireland's Memorial Records 1914–1918’ is a unique, eight-volume set of books published in 1923 to commemorate over 49,000 Irishmen who lost their lives in the Great War. The collection was compiled by The Committee of the Irish National War Memorial under the direction of Sir John French, the 1st Earl of Ypres, and former commander of the B.E.F. When published, it was the most complete record of Ireland’s war dead known to exist. Not only does it record the names of the dead, it also records their service number, rank, regiment, and date of death. In most cases, the serviceman’s place of birth and place of death are also recorded. One notable feature of the work is the illustrations of war scenes by the famous Irish artist and engraver Harry Clarke that adorn each page.
Though it has its flaws, this eight-volume set remains an incredible record and a tribute to men from, or with connections to, the island of Ireland who fell in the war. In this presentation, Will Bryant looks at the origin of the project. He also examines the list in the book, its unusual inclusions and some of its errors.
