Unrewarded Courage: A pilot and his observer on reconnaissance twenty miles over enemy lines when attacked by a "hostile aeroplane" shot through the neck and jaw but managed to complete the reconnaissance nevertheless. A recommendation for a VC declined, so was awarded a D.S.O. like his observer.
