A day of magnificent achievement
Seven days after the start of the German Spring Offensive on 21 March, the enemy launched another major assault on the fronts of Third and First Armies. Sometimes overlooked by British historians as being merely an extension of Operation Michael, the defeat of the German attack on 28 March was a major blow to Ludendorff’s offensive strategy. By concentrating on its principal tactical events, Bill Mitchinson will discuss how and why four hugely outnumbered British divisions managed to thwart Operation Mars within the course of one “magnificent day of achievement".
