When Woolwich Went to War
The London Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich changed dramatically after 1914, with the establishment of the Royal Woolwich Dockyards, Royal Ordnance, and later the Royal Military Academy and Royal Artillery.
As part of his MA, Steve Roberts explored the war’s impact on the borough and its population. The challenges stemmed not only from the war but also from rapid growth, transport issues, and housing expansion—some effects still visible today. Woolwich saw a surge in war industry employment and suffered German air raids from Zeppelins and bombers, which even influenced local street names.
