The 9th (Service Battalion) The Cheshire Regiment 1914-1920

The 9th (Service) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment was a New Army unit raised in Chester on 13 September 1914 as part of Lord Kitchener's Second Army (K2). During its active service from 1914 to 1920, the battalion fought primarily on the Western Front as part of the 19th (Western) Division.
Service History (1914–1920)
- Formation & Training (1914–1915): Formed in Chester, the battalion trained on Salisbury Plain and in Basingstoke before final preparations in March 1915.
- Deployment (July 1915): The battalion arrived in France on 19 July 1915.
- Key Battles & Engagements: The battalion's service included participation in major Western Front battles.
- 1915: Their first major action was a diversionary attack at Pietre.
- 1916: Engaged in the Battle of the Somme, including actions at La Boisselle, High Wood, and Pozieres Ridge.
- 1917: Fought at the Battle of Messines and the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).
- 1918: Transferred to the 56th Brigade and participated in defensive battles against the German Spring Offensive and the Final Advance in Picardy, including the Battle of the Sambre.
- Demobilisation (1919–1920): Demobilisation began in December 1918. The battalion was formally disbanded by 1920.
Command & Structure
- Brigade/Division: The battalion served in the 58th Brigade and later the 56th Brigade, both part of the 19th (Western) Division.
