'Skipton's POW Camp and its German Prisoners' by Anne Buckley
07 May

This month's meeting is moved to Tuesday 7 May as the Monday is a Bank Holiday.

Please note the change of venue!

The meeting is being held at the Lansil Club, Caton Road, LA1 3PE.  I know that some of the members have attended LMHG talks there recently so are already familiar with this venue.

This month's speaker is Anne Buckley and it is her first visit to our branch.

Anne is a lecturer in German and Translation Studies in the German Department at the University of Leeds. Her research focuses on the Great War training and POW camp in Skipton.

This talk is based on Anne's research but also her translation of Kriegsgefangen in Skipton, a memoir written by 60 of the 900 German officers held as POWs in Yorkshire during the Great War. Providing fascinating details about daily life in the camp, she also reveals absorbing stories about the POWs themselves, who included naval captains, U-boat officers and airmen as well as infantrymen.
