No.16 Squadron RFC - The Great War History of an Army Cooperation Squadron. A talk by Colin Buxton.
19 May

Colin Buxton is a former Royal Air Force navigator on Buccaneer strike aircraft. On leaving the RAF, Colin worked for Cobham Plc for 20 years providing Electronic Warfare training.

Colin's presentation covers the history of the Army Cooperation role seen through the experiences of one unit: No.16 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.

From early in the war, until its conclusion, the squadron flew many dangerous and demanding missions over the Western Front - including Artillery Spotting, Reconnaissance, Photography and Contact Patrols.

Colin's talk has many personal recollections from the era, including those from Hugh Dowding and Charles Portal. Both men served on No.16 as Squadron Commanders during the war - and later rose to senior rank in the Royal Air Force.

The presentation includes detailed coverage of 'Bloody April' 1917, when No.16 Squadron became one of the worst affected RFC units at the Battle of Arras.
