Quintinshill, 22nd May 1915; Britain's worst railway disaster

Speaker: Grant Cullen
Quintinshilliln2

The Quintinshill disaster on May 22, 1915, near Gretna Green, Scotland, was Britain's worst rail accident, killing over 200 people (mostly Royal Scots soldiers) in a collision caused by signalmen's negligence.

In the accident a train full of troops - who were heading for Liverpool en-route to Gallipoli - hit a stationary local train, followed by a Glasgow express hitting the wreckage. The disaster was exacerbated by burning wooden carriages, highlighting issues like fatigue and lax rule-following.
