The Easter Rising: A Distraction from the Western Front
The argument that the Easter Rising served as a distraction of the British war effort from the Western Front is a contentious historical viewpoint.
Strategically, the Rising was a planned distraction. Rebels followed the maxim "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity," hoping to open an "Irish Front". Germany supported the insurrection with arms, specifically intending to divert British troops from the Western Front. While up to 20,000 British reinforcements were deployed to Dublin, the question is did it serve as a significant distraction on Continental operations?
Our speaker Paul Cobb an author and military historian, will guide us through this period’s history and share his insights.
