Acton Lemuel Schreiber was the son of the Rev. J E L Schreiber. He was commissioned in the Royal Engineers on 9 December 1884. He served on the North West Frontier of India in 1897 and 1898 and then in the South African War (1899–1902), where he was wounded and awarded the DSO.
From 1910 until 1915 he was CRE 1st Division, being slightly wounded in April 1915. He was promoted brigadier-general and made Chief Engineer III Corps in July 1915, retaining the post until 29 November 1917.
One of his sons, Major O R Schreiber MC, was killed in action at Ypres in October 1917.
