A son of the 4th Earl of Carnarvon, the Hon Aubrey Herbert had been a captain in the Irish Guards, and was also for a time in the Diplomatic Service. At the outbreak of war he was a Member of Parliament for South Somerset.

After some time in hospital on account of a serious wound incurred near Compiegne at the beginning of the war (see Locusts of Steel, Episode 30), the Hon. Aubrey Herbert was passed fit for active service and was sent to Gallipoli, taking part in the first landing. In this episode he describes life on the Peninsula during the summer of 1915 and gives a detailed account of the armistice referred to by General Monash in Episode 73.
