There were no more intrepid adventurers than the officers and men of the "mystery ships." These were disguised merchant vessels which offered themselves as easy prey to the German submarines and only at the moment of attack revealed a hidden but a formidable armament.

Their crews took fearful risks, but during the submarine campaign accounted for no fewer than eleven U-boats.
