I Was There! magazine
A 'part-work' published just before the outbreak of the Second World War provided - in weekly editions - first hand accounts of the war by people who were there. This magazine was called 'I Was There!'. It was originally planned that the series would be in forty parts, but somewhere along the way, the publishers extended this to over 50 magazines.
Sourcing a full set was a challenge, but - over several months - the entire series has been acquired and the full set of 51 magazines are now available in the 'members area' of the WFA website, and can be seen in the 'Searchable Magazine Archive'.

These magazines give 377 personal reminiscences of soldiers, politicians and civilians of their participation in the Great War.
However the more ambitious piece of work is the 'narration' of these 377 personal reminiscences and creating videos.
A number of keen volunteers are busy narrating these accounts and they are going up as a series of short videos (with accompanying images) onto our YouTube channel and also onto a section of the WFA's website.
Over coming months we will add further videos, hopefully at the rate of one per week, with a view to having all 377 reminiscences available in due course.
We believe this project will open up the history of the First World War to a new audience.
On the WFA's YouTube channel the videos are being grouped (following the format in the original magazine) into 'Chapters' (on YouTube these are 'playlists'). These playlists are broadly chronological, but (following the original magazine) occasionally have to 'double back' in time to enable campaigns to be told in a coherent way.
On the WFA website, they videos are being grouped more 'thematically' and a drop down menu enables the videos to be viewed without delving into the structure of the original 'chapters'. These themes cover the campaigns both on the western front and elsewhere in chronological order, but also enable accounts to be filtered by, for example 'Spying', 'Prisoners' and 'Air War'.
