The Pre-War Career of Richard Haldane MP

Born in Edinburgh in July 1858, Richard Burdon Haldane, 1st Viscount Haldane, was a lawyer, philosopher, politician and statesman. Elected to Parliament as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Haddingtonshire, he would go on to hold the office of Secretary of Sate for War between 1905 and 1912. During this time the 'Haldane Reforms' of the British Army were implemented. These provided for the establishment of the British Expeditionary Force, the Territorial Army, MI5, MI6 and the Royal Flying Corps. This presentation looks at the pre-War career of this remarkable man.
