BELGIUMS NATIONAL DAY - 21 July 2026

21 July 2026

A representative group from our committee, WFA members and branch supporters marked the occasion, attending Belgium's Great War casualties who rest in our county.

At the WW1 plot, Cambridge City Cemetery, they attended the graves of Lambert Henri DAENEN, Alfred DEMEULENEIRE, Albert Jos Emile DESIMPELAIRE and Joseph POULISSEN. During a two minutes silence, flowers were laid by Emrys Jones (Branch Chair) & Fergus Read (Branch Committee) before the band played "La Brabanconne".

Events then moved to Histon Cemetery where our representatives attended the grave of Godefroid Guillaume REINARDTS. During a further two minutes silence flowers were laid by Beverley Stephen (Branch Supporter), before the bands "La Brabanconne" marked the end of proceedings.

CWGC gardeners were in attendance at Cambridge and we took the opportunity to thank them for their endeavours and the tidy conditions we found.

Commemorating our Belgian allies on their National Day has become a branch tradition. A few hours justifiably spent and fulfilling a purpose of the WFA.
