The Essex Regiment In Ireland 1918-1922
After the War, in September 1919, the 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment moved to southern Ireland. An Irish Republic had been proclaimed in January, following the 1918 general election. For British troops it was a Home Islands posting, to Irish Nationalists they were an occupying force. The Battalion became directly involved in the Irish War of Independence during which time 17 members of the Battalion died and 19 were wounded. All those that Fell were entitled to a CWGC headstone as it was within the WW1 timescale for the Commission. This talk is based on both British and Irish sources, covering the area southwest of Cork where the Battalion was stationed, in what was in reality a civil war, with all that it entails.
This meeting is at The Poppy Lounge of the Royal British Legion, 205 High Street, Hornchurch, RM11 3XT, starting at 8pm. We have access to the RBL bar during our meetings.
